Degree Overview:
- This Top-Up degree program grants a full Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Counselling.

Year 1 (national level 6):
Enhancing Therapeutic Practice (30 credits):
- Explores the therapeutic relationship and factors influencing it.
- Focuses on personal and professional development through understanding individual counselling styles.
- Encourages critical debate on the strengths and weaknesses of integrative practice.
- Uses personal journals to facilitate deep reflection on the therapeutic relationship.
Research and Evidence in Counselling (30 credits):
- Develops research skills and knowledge specific to counselling practitioners.
- Takes a critical stance on research and evidence in the field.
- Assesses evidence related to chosen areas of personal practice.
Contemporary Approaches To Mental Health And Illness For Counselling Practitioners (20 credits):
- Examines different definitions and theoretical approaches to mental health and illness.
- Explores various treatment methods like medical, cognitive behavioural, psychodynamic, social, and spiritual.
- Investigates debates and challenges in mental health care such as the validity of psychiatric diagnosis.
- Engages in reflective learning on the role of counselling practitioners in recent developments of mental health care.
Counselling Dissertation (40 credits):
- Undertakes a comprehensive literature review on a specific chosen topic in counselling.
- Works with a supervisor to critically discuss current understanding of the chosen topic from multiple perspectives.
- Considers implications for future research and practical applications in counselling practice.
Structure:
- One full day of teaching per week (currently Mondays).
- Additional times may be required for personal tutorials and dissertation meetings with supervisors.
Teaching:
- Interactive approach with a combination of lectures, seminars, and workshops.
- Group work, discussions, and presentations are used in teaching sessions.
- Emphasis on self-reflection and critical evaluation.
Other:
- The University boasts a collection of over 430,000 books and numerous electronic resources.
- Access to specialized psychological and computer laboratories for counselling, forensic, clinical, and psychology courses.
- Specialist facilities include research cubicles, visual psychophysics labs, skills lab, powerlab equipment, tDCS machine, eye tracking lab, private interview booths, simulation rooms, and research software.
- The program is based in the Murray Library on City Campus close to the city center.
