Program Overview


The Prehospital Obstetric and Neonatal Management Short Course from the University of Sunderland is a 7-week program designed for paramedics and healthcare professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills in managing obstetric and neonatal situations. Prehospital Obstetric and Neonatal Management Short Course


Degree Overview:

  • This 7-week short course from the University of Sunderland allows you to develop your knowledge and skills in managing care for women and newborn infants in obstetric situations.
  • The program aligns with the BSc (Hons) Paramedic and Out of Hospital Care and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) scope of practice for paramedics.
  • Through this course, you will be able to:
  • >* Enhance your knowledge of leading safely and effectively managed and prioritized care in obstetric and neonatal situations. >* Build on your existing skills in obstetric presentations, emergency care, newborn infant examinations, and management of gynaecological and obstetric practice.
  • Upon completion, you will gain 20 credits.

Outline:

  • The course is delivered on campus, one day every fortnight for seven weeks between 8:30am and 4pm.
  • The final taught day is OSCE day, and a presentation takes place two weeks after the last study day.
  • Topics covered within the program include:
  • Normal labour and delivery
  • Primary and secondary survey – appropriate assessments of the pregnant woman and newborn
  • Resuscitation skills for mother and newborn
  • Antepartum haemorrhage
  • Primary and secondary postpartum haemorrhage
  • Cord prolapse
  • Breech births
  • Shoulder dystocia
  • Premature birth
  • Care of mother and newborn

  • Teaching and learning take place at Helen McArdle House on the City Campus in Sunderland.
