Objectives:

The goal of the graduate program in chemistry is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and research experience they need to be successful in their chosen field. Students will be able to conduct independent research, write and defend a thesis, and publish their findings in peer-reviewed journals.


Description:

The Master of Science in Chemistry program at Acadia University is a 2-year research-intensive program. Students in the program will complete coursework in advanced chemistry topics and conduct original research under the supervision of a faculty member.   • Assessment The Master of Science degree in Chemistry requires the completion of a minimum of 24 credit hours, including:
  • 18 credit hours of course work taken at the 500-level and above, in the Department of Chemistry, of which 3 courses will be taken in the first term, followed by 2 more courses in subsequent years
  • 6 credit hours of CHEM 5960 (Thesis).
  • At least 6 of the credit hours at the 500-level or above must be courses other than Directed Studies and Seminar.
  • All coursework and the thesis will be graded according to the Acadia University’s policy on graduate grading, with an average GPA of 3.0 required for the completion of the degree. The format and expectations of the M.Sc. thesis will depend on the specific nature of the project. However, generally students will be expected to present the background and rationale, review relevant scientific literature, describe experimental design and results and provide an interpretation. The student usually presents their findings and conclusions supported by their data, and discusses the limitations, future research, and the impact of this study in the scientific context.
