Program Overview
The Micro-Diploma in Applied Health Services Research equips students with specialized knowledge in integrated knowledge translation and implementation science. Through a combination of coursework, field placements, and mentorship, students develop skills to conduct and utilize health services research to improve healthcare outcomes and inform policy decisions. The program prepares graduates for careers as academic researchers, clinician scientists, or healthcare planners.

- Content: The Micro-Diploma in Applied Health Services Research provides students with unique and specialized knowledge about integrated knowledge translation approaches and implementation science techniques.
- Structure: The program can be completed in one year and is eligible for MSc and PhD students completing a thesis-based graduate program related to health services research.
- Course Schedule: Students must complete the following courses:
- CHSC 7730: Topics in Health Services Research (bi-weekly 3-hour class)
- CHSC 7320: Organization and Finance of the Canadian Health Care System (weekly 3-hour class)
- CHSC 7900: Manitoba Training Program Field Placement (10-week equivalent full-time field placement)
- Modules:
- Field Placements: Students complete a 10-week paid field placement with Manitoba-based healthcare planners. This provides an opportunity to contribute to healthcare reform and meet potential employers. Potential field placement sites include Manitoba Health, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, Canadian Mental Health Association, CancerCare Manitoba, and more.
Teaching:
- Teaching Methods: The program combines theoretically informed and practice-based applied health services research training to prepare students for creating research evidence to guide priority health care reform initiatives.
- Faculty: Dr. Malcolm Doupe is the Director of the Manitoba Training Program for Health Services Research. Natalia Teran is the Program Coordinator.
- Unique Approaches: Students have opportunities to attend an academic conference (funding permitted) and receive a nationally competitive stipend. They also develop strong collaborative relationships with healthcare stakeholders.
