Overview

The University of Tasmania International First Year Diploma – Science (UTAS IFYD-Sci) programme has been designed to cater to the needs of academically competent students intending to pursue an undergraduate study at a university, but need additional support with Academic English Language in their first year. These students will benefit from a focused induction to university life's academic, cultural, social, and practical aspects in Tasmania, which might differ significantly from their diverse international backgrounds.


Objectives:

The course is meticulously designed to enable students to fulfill the prerequisite skills and knowledge necessary for direct entry into second-year undergraduate degrees in Science at UTAS. During the program, students will delve into eight units at the first-year undergraduate level. In addition to the three compulsory units, including Academic English, Data Handling, and Statistics and Understanding Science, learners will select five elective units: two for a discipline major and discipline minor, and the remaining one will count as a degree elective. Four of these units will be studied in each semester, resulting in a total of eight units.

Program Content and Structure

The IFYD Science curriculum comprises a total of eight units, including four core units that all program participants must complete: XPD124 - Programming Fundamentals XPD129 - Data Handling and Statistics XPD151 - Introduction to University Mathematics XPD150 - English for Academic Purposes Students intending to pursue a Bachelor of Science with an approved major will complete the following four Science stream units: XPD122 - Global Geographies of Change XPD131 - Ecology XPD132 - Cell Biology, Genetics and Evolution XPD133 - Chemistry 1A Students intending to pursue a Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology with any major will complete the following four Information and Communication Technology stream units: XPD109 - Introduction to Management XPD113 - Data Networks and Security XPD125 - Introduction to Data Science XPD126 - Programming Each semester, students study four units, totaling eight units across two semesters.
