This four-part survey of Western environmental arts explores the architectural and arts history of Aegean, Greek, Roman, and early Christian cultures. The course covers major monuments, their function, symbolism, and significance, as well as the artists, architects, and designers of the periods. Through lectures, readings, and projects, students develop an appreciation for the cultural heritage of the Western world.

- This is part 1 of a four-part survey of environmental arts of the Western world.
- The course covers the architectural and arts history of the Aegean, Greek, Roman, early Christian and Byzantine cultures encompassing early Medieval, Romanesque and Gothic periods.
- Topics include major monuments in terms of function, symbolism, methods of fabrication, style, use of color, ornament and significance.
- The major artists, architects and designers of the various periods are also introduced.
