This studio-based course focuses on translating visual representation into abstraction and encourages students to see in new ways. Students will consider historical models while focusing on the idea of abstracting form and content from observation of the visible world. They will approach the fundamental methods, issues, and concepts of abstraction through drawing exercises using charcoal, pencil, pastel, and water-based mediums to investigate the spatial dynamics and pictorial elements of the form. Various papers and surfaces will also be explored. Imaginative direction and personal expression are encouraged. The course is appropriate for students of all levels.
