The Master of Visual Arts Research (MVARes) is a two-year program that combines studio practice with research, enabling students to advance their artistic expertise, explore innovative solutions, and develop a strong theoretical understanding of their work. The program culminates in a formal exhibition or publication, preparing graduates for leadership roles in the arts community.

Degree Overview:

The Master of Visual Arts Research (MVARes) is a two-year full-time program that provides students with the opportunity to extend their studio expertise, identify challenges, explore innovative solutions, and advance their understanding of the concepts underlying their work and the context in which it is produced. Graduates will be able to demonstrate high performance levels in their studio practice and have developed a strong theoretical understanding of that practice.


Objectives:

  • To provide students with the opportunity to extend their studio expertise and develop a strong theoretical understanding of their practice.
  • To enable students to identify challenges, explore innovative solutions, and advance their understanding of the concepts underlying their work and the context in which it is produced.
  • To prepare students for a major role of leadership for the arts community of the future.

Program Description:

The MVARes program consists of 160 credit points, including:

  • 20 credit points of coursework in Visual Arts Research Methods
  • 140 credit points of studio practice and research, culminating in a formal exhibition or other appropriate form of publication

Module Descriptions:

  • Visual Arts Research Methods: This course provides students with the theoretical and methodological foundations for conducting research in the visual arts.
  • Topics covered include research design, data collection and analysis, and writing research reports.
  • Studio Practice and Research: This course provides students with the opportunity to develop their studio practice and research skills under the supervision of a faculty member.
  • Students will work on a research project that culminates in a formal exhibition or other appropriate form of publication.

Assessment:

Students are assessed on their coursework, studio practice, and research project. Coursework is assessed through a combination of essays, presentations, and portfolios. Studio practice is assessed through a combination of studio visits, critiques, and exhibitions. The research project is assessed through a written thesis and a formal exhibition or other appropriate form of publication.


Teaching:

The MVARes program is taught by a team of experienced faculty members who are active in research and creative practice. The program is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, and studio practice.

Tuition Fees and Payment Information:

An International student is one who is not: an Australian or New Zealand citizen or a Pacific Engagement visa holder or a person who has Australian permanent resident status. Indicative annual tuition fee The indicative annual tuition fee is calculated based on a standard full-time study load which is usually 80 credit points (two full-time trimesters). The indicative annual tuition fee is based on current conditions and available data and should only be used as a guide. These fees are reviewed annually and are subject to change. Tuition fees An International student pays tuition fees. Students are liable for tuition fees for the courses they are enrolled in as at the census date. The tuition fee for students who commence their program prior to 2014 is charged according to the approved program fee for the trimester in which the student commenced the program. The tuition fee for students who commence their program from 2014 onwards is charged according to the approved program fee for the trimester in which the student is enrolled. Permanent resident status If an undergraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will be provided with a domestic fee-paying place. The student may then apply for a Commonwealth supported place at the next admission period provided that the student satisfies the conditions for transfer from a domestic fee-paying place to a Commonwealth supported place as set out in the Undergraduate Programs Admission Policy. If a postgraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth supported place (subject to availability) or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program. If a research student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth Government Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.
