Program Overview
The Department of Physics at Syracuse University offers both a Ph.D. and an M.S. degree. The Ph.D. degree requires 48 credits of graduate-level coursework, a written qualifying examination, a research oral examination, a written thesis, and a thesis defense examination. The M.S. degree can be achieved through a combination of coursework, thesis work, and/or independent study. Students in the Ph.D. program may optionally claim the M.S. degree as they proceed towards the Ph.D.
