This program offers English language instruction for non-native speakers, with Academic ESL courses for higher proficiency and Intensive English courses for lower proficiency. Program Structure:

  • Academic ESL courses for students with higher English proficiency
  • INE courses for students with lower English proficiency
  • Some coursework fulfills general education requirements

Course Schedule:

  • 6 start dates per year for Intensive English
  • 5 start dates per year for Academic ESL
  • 8 terms per year for both programs
  • 15 weeks per term for fall/winter
  • 8 weeks per term for fall/winter
  • 8 or 5 weeks per term for summer

  • ESL 115X: Community as Classroom Lab (1/2 credit)
  • ESL 116: ESL Conversation and Current Events

  • INE 100: Intensive English Emerging Skills in Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening (9 credits)
  • INE 101: Reading and Writing for Non-Native Speakers
  • INE 102: Listening and Speaking for Non-Native Speakers
  • INE 111: Emerging Vocabulary I for Non-Native Speakers
  • INE 112: Intensive English Vocabulary II for Non-Native Speakers
  • INE 190: Intensive English Immersion Experience
  • INE 199: Phonics and Fluency
  • ESL 115A: Community as Classroom Lab (Level 1)
  • ESL 115B: Community as Classroom Lab (Level 2)

Assessment:

  • Placement test upon arrival
  • Reading, writing, and listening assessment during the first week of class
  • Appeal process for students who believe their placement is incorrect

Teaching:

  • ESL Specialist and English and other content area specialists in the ACE Learning Center
