The Trades Discovery for Women program is designed to provide participants with extensive access to the available trades and technical training at BCIT campuses. This highly practical and relevant training program prepares participants to successfully enter and complete trades/technical training or seek apprenticeship.
Objectives:
- Gain hands-on experience in approximately 15 different trades disciplines.
- Complete two weeks of unpaid work experience, partnering education with industry and the community.
- Obtain certifications in Lift Truck Operator (forklift training), Mental Health First Aid, Occupational First Aid Level One, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS).

- The program includes classroom instruction, hands-on training, and industry tours.

- WorkSafeBC Occupational First Aid Level One: Covers essential first aid skills, including airway, breathing, and circulation management.
- Interpret and Sketch Blue Prints: Introduces students to blueprint interpretation and sketching techniques.
- Career Preparation: Guides students in developing job search portfolios and preparing for trade-specific job applications and interviews.
- Work Experience - Industry Tours: Provides students with hands-on experience in the workplace and exposure to industry trends and opportunities.
- Use Oxygen and Acetylene Equipment: Covers the safe operation of oxy-acetylene torches for heating, cutting, and welding.
- Trades Specific Skills: Offers hands-on training in various trades, including carpentry, welding, electrical, and automotive repair.
- Applied Mathematics: Reinforces basic mathematical concepts and their application in trade-related scenarios.
- Apply Safe Work Practices: Provides an overview of WorkSafeBC regulations and safety precautions in the workplace.

- Passing grade for each course is 70% or S, depending on the grade mode of the individual course.

Applicants must meet all entrance requirements and will be accepted on a first qualified basis as long as space remains. When available intakes are full, qualified applicants are wait-listed. Recommended for success
A driver’s license is not required to enter the program. However, it is strongly recommended in order to earn the Lift Truck Operator Certificate and for moving vehicles in and out of the shops.
