Program Overview


This two-year Ontario College Diploma in Recreation and Leisure Services – Sports prepares students for leadership roles in sports and recreation programs. Through hands-on activities, industry guest speakers, and field placements, students gain skills in program design, management, and public relations. Graduates are equipped for careers in recreation and sport management, fitness, event planning, outdoor education, and more.

Objectives:

  • Prepare students for leadership positions in sports and recreation programs.
  • Train students to design recreational initiatives for various settings, including community recreation centers, fitness clubs, seniors' facilities, college and university athletic departments, community associations, corporate fitness programs, tourist resorts, and cruise ships.
  • Enable students to manage indoor and outdoor recreation, sports, and fitness facilities or start their own businesses.
  • Provide students with industry-recognized High Five certification in leadership and coaching, required for working with day camps and children's programs.

Program Description:

This hands-on program produces recreation and sport professionals with the skills and knowledge to help people of all ages and abilities combine wellness and physical activity in their daily lives. Students engage in various activities, including:

  • Outdoor recreation activities such as stand-up paddle boarding, canoeing, slacklining, and skiing.
  • Working directly with children and youth with a variety of exceptionalities and abilities within an adaptive recreation setting.
  • Preparing for self-employment through an independent research project in the final semester, designing an original program or business that can be showcased to employers and investors upon graduation.
  • Pursuing opportunities to complete aquatic and outdoor recreation qualifications.
  • Gaining important public relations, marketing, financial, and research and proposal writing skills.
  • Hearing from industry professional guest speakers in recreation and outdoor education.
  • Gaining 320 hours of on-the-job experience in two field placements within a variety of settings, such as municipal health and wellness centers, military recreation, resort destinations, outdoor education centers, retirement and therapeutic recreation facilities, and international programs.
