Creative Writing, Specialized Diploma
Program Overview
This 20-credit Creative Writing Specialized Diploma equips students with the skills to become professional writers. Through courses in creative writing, literature, and publishing, students develop their writing abilities, understand literary contexts, and prepare for publication or further education in writing. The program offers opportunities for interaction with visiting writers, readings, workshops, and portfolio development.

This Creative Writing Specialized Diploma is a 20-credit program designed for students interested in becoming professional creative writers. Students who complete this program will produce an author portfolio that will allow them to begin seeking publication and/or begin applying to four-year writing programs. Students will have opportunities to interact with visiting writers, attend readings and workshops, organize readings and workshops, and present their work to the NCC community. The Creative Writing Specialized Diploma is designed to be earned either alongside the AA degree in Liberal Arts (English or other concentration) or on its own.
Objectives:
- Create and revise original creative works that use varied literary techniques and are ready for publishing consideration.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the historical and cultural contexts of literature and of their own writing.
- Communicate effectively in multiple creative genres and with multiple audiences in both writing and speech.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the publishing industry, trustworthy resources in the publishing process, and various options for seeking publication of their creative works.

ENGL253 Creative Writing:
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of creative writing, including fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Students will learn how to generate ideas, develop characters, and craft compelling stories.
ENGL254 Creative Writing Portfolio:
This course allows students to develop a portfolio of their best creative work. Students will work with their instructor to select and revise their work, and they will receive feedback from professional writers.
