Individual Modules with Descriptions:
- Introduction to Education, Teaching Methods and Field: Introduces students to the field of education, including the history, philosophy, and current trends in education. Students will also learn about different teaching methods and strategies.
- Production and Utilization of Instructional Technology: Prepares students to use technology effectively in the classroom. Students will learn about different types of educational technology and how to use them to enhance instruction.
- Teaching Reading in the Content Areas Grades 4-8: Provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach reading in the content areas. Students will learn about different reading strategies and how to use them to help students improve their reading comprehension.
- Middle Level Cognitive Development: Examines the cognitive development of middle school students. Students will learn about the different stages of cognitive development and how to use this knowledge to create effective learning experiences for middle school students.
- ELL Strategies and Practice: Prepares students to work with English language learners (ELLs). Students will learn about the different challenges that ELLs face and how to use effective teaching strategies to help them succeed.
- Teaching Middle Level Language Arts: Provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach language arts in the middle grades. Students will learn about different language arts concepts and how to use them to create effective learning experiences for middle school students.
- Standards-Based Instruction & Assessment in the Inclusionary Classroom: Prepares students to teach in inclusive classrooms. Students will learn about different standards-based instruction and assessment strategies and how to use them to create effective learning experiences for all students.
- Educational Psychology for Diverse Learners: Examines the psychological principles that underlie effective teaching and learning. Students will learn about different learning styles and how to use this knowledge to create effective learning experiences for all students.
- Educational Measurements, Assessment and Evaluation: Prepares students to use assessment data to improve instruction. Students will learn about different types of assessments and how to use them to measure student learning.
- History and Philosophy of Education: Examines the history and philosophy of education. Students will learn about the different ways that education has been viewed throughout history and how these views have influenced educational practices.
- Practicum in Middle-Level & Secondary Education: Provides students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting. Students will work with a mentor teacher in a middle school or secondary school classroom.
- Student Teaching - Middle Level Grades: Provides students with the opportunity to student teach in a middle school classroom. Students will work with a cooperating teacher to plan and deliver instruction, assess student learning, and manage the classroom.
Assessment:
- Grades below a "C" are not admissible for Teacher Candidacy.
- All grades in Professional Education & Specialization must be grades of "C" or above.
Teaching:
- The program is taught by a team of experienced faculty members who are committed to providing students with a high-quality education.
- The program uses a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, discussions, simulations, and field experiences.
- The program provides students with the opportunity to work with a mentor teacher in a real-world setting.
Careers:
- Graduates of the program are eligible for Pennsylvania certification to teach English Language Arts in grades 4-8.
- Graduates of the program may also pursue careers in other fields, such as educational administration, curriculum development, or educational research.
