Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The UNSW Master of Laws (LLM) is a one-year full-time postgraduate degree that offers advanced and contemporary understanding of one or more areas of legal study. It provides opportunities for students to acquire further expertise and enhance their career prospects. The LLM program offers eight specialization areas that reflect UNSW Law & Justice's expertise and the latest developments in legal scholarship. Students can choose from Chinese International Business & Economic Law, Corporate, Commercial & Taxation Law, Criminal Justice & Criminology, Dispute Resolution, Environmental Law & Sustainable Development, Human Rights Law & Policy, International Law, and Media, Intellectual Property & Technology Law. Alternatively, students can also choose to complete a generalist program and benefit from choosing courses across the specialization areas. The program is not a pathway to legal practice. Students seeking a postgraduate qualification to practice law should consider UNSW's Juris Doctor.

Outline:

The UNSW Master of Laws program consists of eight courses (48 units of credit), including the option to undertake:

  • Foundation courses (if required)
  • A specialization made up of a four-course sequence or a generalist program
  • Cross-disciplinary electives from across UNSW's faculties
  • A substantial independent legal research project
  • Students who choose to complete a specialization (made up of a major sequence of four courses) will receive the name of the specialization in parentheses after 'Master of Laws' on their testamur. Courses are taught by leading academics and industry professionals in various formats throughout the UNSW academic calendar's three terms. Some classes run for three hours per week over a teaching term, while others arrange class hours more intensively to allow students to focus on their research project. Courses are offered either online or involve in-person classes.

Careers:

Graduates of the UNSW Master of Laws program will have advanced, integrated, and up-to-date legal knowledge that they can apply to a broad range of law and non-law career opportunities. Law graduates will find this program appealing as it allows them to acquire a new field of legal knowledge for a career change, career advancement, or professional development. For non-law graduates, the acquired legal knowledge and skills will help them understand how the law works in their industries.
