About Program

Program Overview

The Master of Music (Performance and Pedagogy) program combines advanced performance studies with pedagogical skills and knowledge. Students engage in recitals, seminars, workshops, and teaching practice, culminating in a major recital and research project. The program prepares graduates for dual careers in music performance and education, enabling them to excel in both fields.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Master of Music (Performance and Pedagogy) program combines performance studies in a specific specialization with the theory, method, and practice of teaching. It is designed to advance technical mastery and provide pedagogical skills and knowledge through seminars and workshops. Students undertake a significant research project on learning and teaching processes and gain hands-on experience through teaching practice in selected schools and colleges. The program culminates in minor and major recitals with pedagogy-related content and one-to-one lessons with performance staff.

Outline:

The program consists of 12 units of performance courses and 12 units of pedagogy courses each year. In the first year, students undertake two minor recitals with pedagogy-related themes. In the second year, they undertake a major recital. Individual tuition is provided each year. Pedagogy courses are taught in seminars and workshops with off-campus teaching practice in selected schools and colleges.

Assessment:

Assessments include recitals, written assignments, and teaching practice. Students must pass Performance & Pedagogy IVb in the first year of the program to progress into the second year of study. If students fall within the 'Additional Assessment' range for Performance & Pedagogy IVb, they will exit with the Graduate Diploma and will not be able to continue with the Master's program.

Teaching:

The program is taught by experienced performance and pedagogy faculty members. Students benefit from weekly one-to-one lessons with performance staff and have the opportunity to choose their repertoire. The program also features a partnership with the Australian String Quartet.

Careers:

Graduates of the program are prepared for dual careers in music performance and education. They may perform in orchestras while running private music studios, solo as well as coach students through masterclasses and workshops, or play chamber music while teaching on school and college campuses.
