The Gender Studies MA program at UNBC provides the opportunity to work with scholars in a variety of disciplines who share a focus on women and/or gender as a category of analysis. The program has particular strengths in areas such as gender, literature, and cultural studies; gender, history, and anthropology; gender, colonialism, and postcolonialism; gender and globalization; feminism, justice, and ethics; gender and health; and gender and international studies. Gender Studies MA students have the opportunity to design a course of study that incorporates gender- or feminism-based methodologies and interdisciplinarity while developing expertise in an area of concentration. While providing a transnational frame of reference, we also pay attention to the national and regional; students will therefore emerge from the program with both a broad analytical framework and a well-developed focus.

Program Description:
The Gender Studies MA program is a 24-credit hour program that can be completed in one or two years. Students can choose to complete a thesis or a major research paper.
Thesis Option:
Students who choose to complete a thesis will take 15 credit hours of coursework and write a 100-page thesis.
Coursework Option:
Students who choose to complete a major research paper will take 21 credit hours of coursework and write a 30-40 page paper.

- GNDR 602-3: Gender and History
- GNDR 603-3: Gender and Anthropology

- GNDR 606-3: Feminist Research Methods
Individual Modules with Description:
- GNDR 600-3: Feminist Theory: This course provides a comprehensive overview of feminist theory, from its origins to the present day. Students will learn about the different schools of feminist thought, as well as the key debates and controversies within feminist theory.
- GNDR 601-3: Gender and Literature: This course examines the relationship between gender and literature. Students will read a variety of literary texts from different cultures and historical periods, and they will analyze how gender is represented and constructed in these texts.
- GNDR 602-3: Gender and History: This course examines the relationship between gender and history. Students will learn about the different ways that gender has shaped historical events, and they will analyze the role that gender has played in shaping our understanding of the past.
- GNDR 603-3: Gender and Anthropology: This course examines the relationship between gender and anthropology. Students will learn about the different ways that gender is understood and experienced in different cultures, and they will analyze the role that gender plays in shaping social and cultural life.
- GNDR 604-3: Gender and Globalization: This course examines the relationship between gender and globalization. Students will learn about the different ways that gender is affected by globalization, and they will analyze the role that gender plays in shaping global processes.
- GNDR 605-3: Gender, Health, and Well-being: This course examines the relationship between gender and health. Students will learn about the different ways that gender affects health and well-being, and they will analyze the role that gender plays in shaping health care systems and policies.
- GNDR 606-3: Feminist Research Methods: This course provides an overview of feminist research methods. Students will learn about the different ways that feminist researchers approach research, and they will gain the skills necessary to conduct their own feminist research projects.
Assessment:
Students in the Gender Studies MA program are assessed on their coursework and their thesis or major research paper. Coursework is typically assessed through essays, exams, and presentations. The thesis or major research paper is assessed by a committee of faculty members. The committee will evaluate the student's research, writing, and analytical skills.
