Program Overview

The Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) program at The Hague University of Applied Sciences is a 3-year full-time program that offers a unique, project-based approach to industrial design engineering. Students work on real-world projects for external clients, and they have the opportunity to choose from three tracks: Product Engineering, Strategic Design, or Design Aesthetics and Perception. Graduates of the IDE program are well-prepared for careers in a variety of fields, including product design, industrial design, user experience design, and innovation management.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

Ever wondered how IKEA managed to become the largest and most popular furniture retailer in the world? Well, it might have had something to do with the fact they let groups of users share their experience of the products and create sustainable furniture to suit their needs. Co-creation has become a reality for every professional designer. And it’s second nature to our IDE students at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS). Anyone can come up with a ground-breaking idea. But IDE teaches you to funnel your creativity by collaborating with all stakeholders, taking ethics and other cultures into account and making a positive impact with the launch of your project. You could design a solution for cleaning plastic waste from the city canals based on nature’s principles (biomimicry). You could design and engineer a sun visor or windshield wiper for the car of the future. Or you could create a lighting solution that is sustainable and helps students and young professionals keep a healthy daily rhythm. The first semester at IDE provides you with the Basics of IDE: the methods, knowledge and skills that you apply immediately in your first design project for an external client. The next three semesters you can choose from the different semesters on offer. All IDE semesters are integrated projects for real clients supported by training in skills and methods. Your fifth semester is for the minor space; you can choose a minor at THUAS or elsewhere, do an internship or go on exchange. In the final semester you’ll put your skills to the test in in individual innovation project for a client.

Outline:

The IDE program is a 3-year full-time program that offers a unique, project-based approach to industrial design engineering. The program is divided into five semesters, each with its own focus.

  • Semester 1: The first semester provides students with the basics of industrial design engineering, including design thinking, sketching, prototyping, and materials science.
  • Students also work on a real-world design project for an external client.
  • Semester 2: Students choose one of three tracks: Product Engineering, Strategic Design, or Design Aesthetics and Perception.
  • Each track focuses on a different aspect of industrial design engineering, and students work on a series of projects related to their chosen track.
  • Semester 3: Students continue to work on projects related to their chosen track.
  • They also have the opportunity to take a minor in a related field, such as business or engineering.
  • Semester 4: Students work on a major design project that integrates all of the skills they have learned in the program.
  • This project is typically a real-world project for an external client.
  • Semester 5: Students complete their studies with an individual innovation project.
  • This project is an opportunity for students to develop their own design ideas and to demonstrate their skills as a designer.

Assessment:

Students in the IDE program are assessed on their coursework, projects, and exams. Coursework is typically graded on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest grade. Projects are graded on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 being the highest grade. Exams are graded on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 being the highest grade. In addition to their coursework, projects, and exams, students must also complete a portfolio of their work. The portfolio is a collection of the student's best work from throughout the program, and it is used to assess the student's overall progress and development.

Teaching:

The IDE program is taught by a team of experienced faculty members who are experts in their field. The faculty members use a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, tutorials, workshops, and project-based learning. The program also benefits from the input of industry professionals, who regularly guest lecture and participate in student projects. This ensures that students are exposed to the latest trends and developments in the field of industrial design engineering.

Careers:

Graduates of the IDE program are well-prepared for careers in a variety of fields, including:

  • Product design
  • Industrial design
  • User experience design
  • Interaction design
  • Service design
  • Innovation management
  • Entrepreneurship
