Program Overview

The Communication MA program provides students with the theoretical foundation and practical skills necessary to excel in the field of communication. The program is designed to develop students' critical thinking, research, and communication abilities in order to prepare them for a variety of careers in the public and private sectors.
Objective:
Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to: Interpret and evaluate academic and industry-oriented research reports and findings. Evaluate and use scientific research and tested models of communication processes to identify, develop, and implement plans to achieve specific communication goals and apply them to real-world settings. Produce effective messages and select appropriate channels to achieve specific outcomes within complex work environments. Evaluate the implications of communication processes and develop messages and strategies that are consistent with ethical principles.
Outline:
The Communication MA program consists of a 15-credit hour core, a 9-credit hour applications sequence, and a 6-credit hour elective sequence. The core consists of two required courses focusing on the fundamental theories and basic research methods within the field. The applications sequence consists of three courses chosen from four options: Strategic Communication in Organizations, Interpersonal Communication, Mass Communication, and Health Communication. The elective sequence can be chosen from any course offered by the department, or, students may opt to complete an internship or thesis.

Students are assessed through a variety of methods, including exams, papers, presentations, and portfolios. The grading system is based on a 4.0 scale, with a grade of 3.0 or higher required to pass the program.
