Program Overview


This program prepares students for the Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA) exams at the 4th Class Power Engineering Level. It covers mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics, safety, welding, electricity, controls, and various types of power plants. Graduates can pursue careers as Power Plant Coordinators, Operating Engineers/Refinery Operators, or Power Engineers.

Mandatory Courses:

  • MECH-1106 Applied Science 1 (2.5 credits)
  • Covers mathematics, elementary mechanics, elementary dynamics, elementary thermodynamics, and basic mechanical drawings required for the Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA) exams at the 4th Class Power Engineering Level.
  • SFTY-1055 Plant Safety & Administration (4 credits)
  • Covers power plant safety, fire prevention and control, environment, as well as codes and legislation required for the TSSA exams at the 4th Class Power Engineering Level.
  • Chapters 22 to 39.
  • WELD-1057 Material & Welding (4 credits)
  • Covers engineering materials, welding methods and inspections, welding terms, forge and fusion welding processes required for the TSSA exams at the 4th Class Power Engineering Level.
  • Chapters 46-48.
  • ELNC-3039 Electricity & Controls (5.5 credits)
  • Covers basic electrical theory and equipment, basic instrumentation systems and control, basic computer application, and auxiliary building systems required for the TSSA exams at the 4th Class Power Engineering Level.
  • Chapters 78 to 89.
  • MECH-1108 High Pressure Boilers (2.5 credits)
  • Covers sootblowers, continuous and intermittent blowdown, boiler preparation and routine and emergency boiler operations required for the TSSA exams at the 4th Class Power Engineering Level.
  • Chapters 62 to 65.
  • MTNC-3006 Types of Plants (1.5 credits)
  • Covers power house maintenance, boiler maintenance, boiler cleaning, hot oil systems, and steam-related industry processes required for the TSSA exams at the 4th Class Power Engineering Level.
  • Chapters 137 to 144.

Careers:

  • Power Plant Coordinator: Responsible for planning, development, engineering, construction, operation, and maintenance of all building, infrastructure, sites, and services on campus.
  • Operating Engineer/Refinery Operator: Responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of refinery processes and safe operating of boiler and ammonia systems.
  • Power Engineer: Start up and shut down power plant equipment, regulate water levels, perform routine equipment maintenance, and operate automated or computerized control systems.
