The Opticianry (Diploma) program at Douglas College combines healthcare, business, fashion, and technology. Degree Overview:

The Opticianry (Diploma) program at Douglas College combines healthcare, business, fashion, and technology. Students will study all aspects of modern opticianry, including eyeglasses, contact lenses, and refraction technologies. Classes are held three days a week, allowing students to work part-time while studying. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to take the College of Opticians exam, a required step in becoming a licensed optician in British Columbia.

  • OPTI 1112: Opticianry Lab Skills I (6 credits)
  • CMNS 1216: Interpersonal Skills for the Workplace (3 credits)

Semester II

  • OPTI 1200: Opticianry Theory II (5 credits)
  • OPTI 1210: Opticianry Clinical Practice (4 credits)
  • OPTI 1212: Opticianry Lab Skills II (6 credits)

Semester III

  • OPTI 1310: Opticianry Eyeglass Practicum (5 credits)

Semester IV

  • OPTI 2101: Theory in Contact Lenses and Optical Technologies I (4 credits)
  • OPTI 2113: Laboratory in Contact Lenses and Optical Technologies I (6 credits)

Semester V

  • OPTI 2201: Theory in Contact Lenses and Optical Technologies II (4 credits)
  • OPTI 2211: Clinical in Contact Lenses and Optical Technologies II (5 credits)
  • OPTI 2213: Laboratory in Contact Lenses and Optical Technologies II (6 credits)

Semester VI

  • OPTI 2311: Clinical in Contact Lenses and Optical Technologies III (4 credits)

Assessment:

Students must successfully complete all courses with a minimum grade of "C" (except for Mastery graded courses) and maintain a minimum program GPA of 2.00. Additionally, students must complete 50% of their coursework at Douglas College and 25% of their coursework must be completed at Douglas College for students completing by Summer 2023.


Teaching:

The program is taught by experienced faculty members who are experts in their field. The program also includes practical experience through retail site placements.


Careers:

Graduates of the Opticianry program are qualified to work as contact lens dispensers, contact lens technicians, contact lens fitters, dispensing opticians, dispensing opticians office managers, licensed opticians, optical device dispensers, optical frame fitters, and optical laboratory technicians.
