Program Overview
This program offers a comprehensive education in truck driving, including hands-on training and preparation for the commercial driver's license test. It also provides a Forklift Operator Certificate, covering safe operation and OSHA regulations. Students must meet certain requirements, including age and physical fitness, and consent of the instructor is required for admission. The program assists with preparing for the commercial learner's permit test and conducts mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Truck Driving Program
- 320 hours of education, including online courses, hands-on yard, and road training
- Students learn map reading, trip planning, log keeping, vehicle systems, cargo handling, driving under adverse conditions, defensive driving, and transporting hazardous materials
- Mandatory written examination and driving test must be taken at an Illinois state designated commercial driver’s license testing center
- Equipment for the driving test is provided to ECC students
- Students must be at least 18 years old to be commercially licensed intrastate; age 21 for interstate and/or to transport placarded hazardous materials
Forklift Operator Certificate
- Classroom and hands-on instruction in the safe operation of lift trucks
- Students learn about safety inspections, balance calculation, safe operation for loading/unloading and movement of lift with and without loads
- All instruction follows training requirements outlined by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations
- Students earn a Forklift Operator Certificate upon completion
- Qualifying students must be a minimum of 18 years of age, in good mental and physical health, be able to lift a minimum of twenty-five pounds unassisted, bend, stretch, sit, and stand for extended periods of time
Teaching:
- Consent of instructor is required for program admission
- Consent requirements include:
- Must have an ECC student ID number
- Must obtain an Illinois state commercial learners permit (CLP) and valid the duration of the program
- Must be a minimum of 18 years old
- The DOT has regulations which govern the use of drugs and alcohol by commercial motor vehicle drivers, and which require Elgin Community College to conduct mandatory drug and alcohol testing of students in the Truck Driving Program at specific times and under specific conditions
- The truck driving program has assistance with preparing for the CLP test
- CLP test is $50.00 payable to and taken at West Chicago or Elk Grove Village IL Secretary of State Offices
