Program Overview
The Biotechnology - Advanced program at Centennial College equips students with the scientific principles, techniques, and skills required in industrial microbiology and chemistry. Students will study biotechnology applications, biochemistry, microbial genetics, and clinical and environmental microbiology.
Program Objectives
- To provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for a career in industrial microbiology or chemistry
- To prepare students for advanced study in biotechnology or a related field
- To develop students' critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills
Program Structure
The Biotechnology - Advanced program is a three-year, six-semester program that is offered in a hybrid delivery mode. The program is offered at the Morningside Campus and is taught by a team of experienced faculty members.
Course Schedule
The Biotechnology - Advanced program includes a variety of courses, including:
- Microbiology
- Biochemistry
- Microbial Genetics
- Clinical Microbiology
- Environmental Microbiology
- Biotechnology Applications
Individual Modules
The Biotechnology - Advanced program includes a variety of modules, each of which focuses on a specific topic. Some of the modules included in the program are:
- Microbial Growth and Metabolism
- This module introduces students to the basic principles of microbial growth and metabolism. Students will learn about the different types of microorganisms, their nutritional requirements, and how they grow and reproduce.
- Clinical Microbiology
- This module introduces students to the basic principles of clinical microbiology. Students will learn about the different types of microorganisms that can cause disease, how to diagnose and treat infectious diseases, and how to prevent the spread of infection.
- Environmental Microbiology
- This module introduces students to the basic principles of environmental microbiology. Students will learn about the different types of microorganisms that live in the environment, how they interact with each other and with the environment, and how they can be used to clean up pollution.
- Biotechnology Applications
- This module introduces students to the different applications of biotechnology. Students will learn about the use of microorganisms in the production of food, pharmaceuticals, and other products. They will also learn about the use of biotechnology in the environmental cleanup and in the development of new medical treatments.
