Program Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging Science prepares students for careers as Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or Cardiovascular Sonographers. The program requires a minimum of 138-142 credits and includes three years of study at FDU followed by 15 months at Rutgers University. Graduates are eligible for national certification and state licensure, where applicable, and are prepared for careers in patient care, diagnosis, and treatment planning.

Degree Overview:
The Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging Science prepares graduates with the knowledge and skills to understand and use technologies to examine various body parts to guide patient diagnosis, monitoring, treatment planning, and other critical decision-making. Students can choose between two concentrations: Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Cardiovascular Sonography. Graduates are eligible for national certification and state licensure, where applicable. The national certification in sonography is awarded to qualified individuals who demonstrate their knowledge and skills through a rigorous examination process administered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

The program requires a minimum of 138 credits for Diagnostic Medical Sonography and 142 credits for Cardiovascular Sonography. Students complete three years of study at FDU before applying for acceptance into the Rutgers School of Health Professions.
Careers:
Graduates are prepared for careers as:
- Diagnostic Medical Sonographers: Provide patient services using diagnostic ultrasound under physician supervision, interpreting ultrasound images and identifying abnormalities.
- Cardiovascular Sonographers (Echocardiographers): Specialize in using imaging technology to support the diagnosis and monitoring of heart problems. Certification in sonography is not required in all states, but it is preferred or required by many employers and can lead to increased job opportunities, higher salaries, and professional recognition.
