Program Overview

This program prepares students for dual licensure in General Education and Special Education through a two-phase structure. Phase I includes coursework for licensure, while Phase II offers optional electives for a Master's degree. The program emphasizes clinical practice, Praxis exam preparation, and EdTPA assessment preparation, ensuring graduates are highly marketable and eligible for higher salaries.

Program Outline

Outline:

  • Phase I:
  • Includes professional sequence coursework necessary to earn dual licensure.
  • Phase II:
  • Optional additional elective coursework (15 credits) to complete the Master's degree. Courses are chosen in consultation with the faculty advisor based on the student's background and future career goals.

Assessment:

  • Passing the Praxis Core examination prior to completing the Transition into Teaching course.
  • Passing all required Praxis II Licensure examinations prior to student teaching.
  • Successfully completing a full-year student teaching internship and passing the Pearson edTPA to be issued licensure at the time of program completion.

Teaching:

  • Clinical Practice: During the final year, students engage in Clinical Practice, working in a classroom two days a week during Clinical I and a full-time schedule of five days a week during Clinical II.
  • Praxis Prep: The program provides resources and support for students to prepare for the Praxis exam, including courses in Praxis review, online or in-person tutoring, and access to a "Praxis secrets" library.
  • EdTPA Assessment Preparation: The program's coursework is designed to prepare students to successfully pass the EdTPA assessment, which evaluates their ability to plan, instruct, and assess.
  • Students create a mini portfolio in their seminar course and receive guided mentorship from an instructor and clinical supervisor.

Careers:

  • Graduates are prepared for dual licensure in General Education and Special Education, making them highly marketable to schools seeking new teachers.
  • Earning a master's degree at Felician University can lead to a higher salary as a teacher compared to holding only a bachelor's degree.
