The Museum Science and Management program (MSM) at the University of Tulsa offers an interdisciplinary curriculum leading to a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree. The program aims to prepare students for careers in museum administration, fiscal management, collections care and research, and education. Students gain hands-on experience in utilizing objects and collections for research, exhibitions, publications, and programming, while also developing a solid foundation in museum administration, leadership, and fundraising. The MSM program consists of 33 credit hours, including coursework and museum-based work.

  • Two courses from the following:

  • LAW 6023 Copyright Law in the Digital Age

Museum Administration Track

  • Twelve hours selected from the following:
  • LAW 6023 Copyright Law in the Digital Age (Recommended)
  • MSM 7551-3 Museum Project (Can be taken multiple times for up to 3 total credit hours)
  • MSM 7093 Law Related Issues for the Museum Professional
  • MSM 7863 Special Topics
  • MSM 7991-3 Independent Study
  • ACCT, MKTG, MBA, or MGT - Any 6000 or 7000 level course with pre-approval.
  • A maximum of one 6000-level course can be taken for credit.

Informal Education and Object-based Learning Track

  • MSM 7083 Museum Education I
  • MSM 7183 Museum Education II
  • Six hours selected from the following:
  • MSM 7551-3 Museum Project (Can be taken multiple times for up to 3 total credit hours)
  • MSM 7863 Special Topics
  • MSM 7991-3 Independent Study

Collections Care, Digitization, and Research Track

  • MSM 7013 Conservation Principles
  • MSM 7073 Museum Collections/Data Management
  • If MSM 7073 was taken to complete general core requirements, 9 hours must be taken from the list of track electives below.
  • Minimum of six hours selected from the following:
  • MSM 7551-3 Museum Project (Can be taken multiple times for up to 3 total credit hours)
  • MSM 7863 Special Topics
  • MSM 7991-3 Independent Study
  • 6000- or 7000- courses with pre-approval of the MSM program co-directors and the instructor.

Electives (9 hours)

  • Electives in art history, accounting, anthropology, chemistry, communications, geosciences, history, law, management, and marketing selected with the approval of the Graduate Program Advisor.

Internship or Capstone Project

  • Students must complete an internship in a museum.
  • No more than six credit hours of MSM 7440-6 Museum Internship will count towards the degree.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:

  • Writing sample that demonstrates the student’s research and/or critical thinking skills.
  • Undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0.
  • Students who do not satisfy this requirement but have at least a 3.0 GPA in their major field may be admitted on probation by the Graduate School upon the recommendation of the Graduate Program Advisor. Probationary status is removed by completing nine credit hours of approved graduate study with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in one semester for a full-time student and within three semesters for a part-time student.
  • Letters of recommendation from at least three professors or former supervisors who are familiar with the applicant’s technical background, work performance, and academic potential.
  • Statement of purpose that includes a description of the applicant’s background, rationale for the desired track, specific interests in museum science and management, and long-term professional objectives.
