Program Overview
Brock University's Earth Sciences program trains geoscientists to study the Earth and other planets, equipping them with skills for resource extraction, hazard mitigation, and climate change research. Graduates can pursue careers as professional geoscientists, exploration geologists, hydrogeologists, and paleontologists, contributing to our understanding of the Earth and beyond.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
The Earth Sciences program at Brock University trains geoscientists, who study the Earth and other planets to understand their origin and history. Graduates possess the knowledge and skills to locate and extract resources such as iron, lithium, nickel, copper, potash, oil, and gas, study and mitigate hazards like volcanoes and earthquakes, and contribute to the understanding of global climate change. The program provides a foundation for a career in geosciences, with opportunities to work on every continent and combine indoor and outdoor activities. Earth scientists contribute to refining our planetary knowledge, as there are still many undiscovered resources and unmapped areas on Earth, as well as unclear periods of Earth's history. The program also helps students understand other solar system bodies; two professors are planetary geologists, and one is a Participating Scientist on the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission, searching for signs of ancient microbial life on Mars.
Careers:
Graduates of the Earth Sciences program can pursue careers as professional geoscientists (PGeo designation), minerals exploration geologists, mining geologists, hydrogeologists, and paleontologists.
