About Program

Program Overview

The MA in War and Society explores the multifaceted nature of war through interdisciplinary lenses, examining its political, social, cultural, and technological dimensions. Students engage in research, seminars, and workshops to develop a comprehensive understanding of war's impact on society. The program culminates in a dissertation on a specialized topic, preparing graduates for careers in government, humanitarian organizations, and other fields related to war and conflict.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The MA in War and Society is a truly unique course exploring seismic events that sparked violent change throughout the course of human history. You will attempt to investigate what war means, and discover a meaningful definition. Analysed through multiple contexts including the political, social, cultural, technological, historical, military and media, you will learn how messages can be distorted in subtle and sophisticated ways. This is a collaborative, interdisciplinary MA Degree programme that is harnessed by the breadth of research expertise in the School of Culture and Communication.

Outline:

You study three compulsory 20-credit international relations modules, and a further three optional modules, before taking a 60-credit dissertation project in the second part of the course. The compulsory modules are: research on war and society; war, technology and culture; and war, identity and society. A wide selection of further optional modules span from approaches to international relations, to politics in contemporary Britain, and from violence, conflict and development to cyber governance.

Teaching:

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students. Practical skills sessions, seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and presentations. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching. Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and peers and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in our virtual learning environment (Canvas), such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study. The full-time course structure is split across the year with three modules taken in each academic semester (a total of six modules) and then a dissertation over the summer.

Careers:

Graduates of the MA in War and Society go on to have careers in government and politics, humanitarian organisations, military organisations, business and media.
