The MA in International Security and Development program explores the crucial role of security and conflict in international politics and development discourse. It provides students with an advanced understanding of traditional security issues such as war and conflict, as well as non-traditional issues such as economic security, environmental security, health, and migration. Students delve into the main approaches to security studies, including realism, securitization theory, feminist approaches, critical theory, and poststructuralism. The Extended MA (EMA) is a 240-credit postgraduate qualification equivalent to 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), recognized as a Masters qualification throughout the European Union. The EMA encompasses a standard UK MA with an additional 60 credits (30 ECTS) undertaken in one semester at a partner institution overseas. The EMA offers not only an EU-recognized postgraduate qualification but also enhances the qualification's employability credentials with a study abroad experience. The partner institution for the EMA International Security and Development is the Department of International and Area Studies at The University of Oklahoma. The department boasts expertise in security and development, with approximately twenty faculty members. The University of Oklahoma enrolls over 30,000 students, holds the Carnegie Foundation's highest tier of research activity classification, and ranks among the top 400 universities globally according to the Times Higher Education rankings.
Outline:
The program consists of four compulsory 20-credit international relations modules, two optional modules, and a 60-credit dissertation project in the second half of the course. Compulsory modules cover human rights, humanitarian intervention and global justice; critical security studies; and violence, conflict, and development. Optional modules span a range of topics, including war, technology and culture; the policy-making process; rethinking global governance; and democracy and constitutional design.

The program utilizes a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, and research projects.
