Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This Professional Doctorate in Practical Theology (DProf) is a part-time research program developed and run in partnership with the Cambridge Theological Federation. The program provides an in-depth understanding of the spiritual and ethical dimensions relevant to various fields, including social policy, business, and religious ministry.

Outline:

The program begins with an introduction to practical theology's key debates, methods, and thinkers, as well as advanced research methods. This is delivered through two taught modules, available through either blended or distance learning, each assessed by a 7,000-word assignment. Upon satisfactory completion of the taught modules, students develop a research proposal and then complete a 60,000-word dissertation. Throughout the program, students benefit from the guidance of world-class theologians and high-quality supervision and research training. There are several research seminar days each year, as well as a three-day summer school. With an independent study commitment of 6-8 hours per week, students can combine the course with a job. Personal faith commitment is not necessary, and students can tailor their research proposals to reflect their personal and/or professional interests.

Assessment:

The two taught modules are assessed by 7,000-word assignments. The final dissertation is 60,000 words.

Teaching:

The program is taught by theologians from Anglia Ruskin University and the Cambridge Theological Federation. The University provides a full program of research training. The program benefits from world-class theologians and high-quality supervision and research training.

Careers:

The program is designed to provide graduates with the knowledge and skills to research the aspects of practical theology most relevant to their life, vocation, or profession. Graduates gain practical theological knowledge and the skills to apply it in various fields, including social policy, business, government, public services, and faith ministries.
