Program Overview
Contemporary Issues in Mental Health Care
Overview
This course explores current issues in mental health from both a national and global perspective, including culture and media.
Full Description
Explore current issues in mental health from both a national and global perspective. The need to understand individuals holistically - taking into account cultural beliefs, values and attitudes, and social context - is gaining importance due to the complexity of mental health problems and the increased need for services for different ethnic groups and for individuals whose lives have changed due to civil unrest.
During this module, you’ll examine how mental health is represented in the news, on social media and in fictional sources, including films and literature; you’ll further explore how this portrayal can impact upon interpretations of mental health and mental illness within a given society. You’ll study the delivery of culturally appropriate health care and how this knowledge can be applied in practice.
During the module you will:
- Critically evaluate theories and approaches in cross-cultural mental health care
- Analyse and synthesise the management of mental health problems across different societies
- Demonstrate comprehensive understanding and application of underpinning concepts to provide care that addresses contemporary issues in mental health care
- Consider and critically evaluate the impact of stigmatization of mental illness via the media.
