Program Overview


This short evening course prepares architectural students for their Part 3 course by providing insights into architectural practice, the RIBA, and enhancing personal and professional skills. Led by experienced RIBA Part 3 guidance team, the course covers topics such as professionalism, negotiation skills, and critical thinking. It includes seminars on finding value in practice and guidance on showing one's worth.

Program Outline


Degree Overview:

This short evening course is designed to prepare students for the period in practice after completing their Part 2 Diploma or MArch, before starting their Part 3 course. The course aims to help students make the most of their professional experience.


Objectives:

  • Understand the process and procedures of architectural practice.
  • Be familiar with the requirements of the ARB and the RIBA.
  • Enhance personal and professional skills to expand career opportunities.
  • Develop reflective learning.

Course Structure:

  • Introduction Session (6.30–8.00pm) Tuesday 30th January 2024:
  • Wilfred Achille
  • PECHA KUCHA: TEAMWORK / 20x20
  • Each student will share their experience of working as a team and technical issues in practice.
  • Each student must prepare a 20 slide PowerPoint presentation and a 20 second short talk.
  • Each slide should focus on the following:
  • Working with consultants e.g.
  • structural/mechanical/electrical engineers to resolve a technical issues
  • Highs and lows of working with others within the practice e.g.
  • IT specialist to resolve BIM issues or assisting project architects with specific tasks
  • Session 1 – Tuesday 06 February 2024 (6.30-8pm): How to make the most of your practical work experience and the tools required to succeed part 3 (Wilfred Achille, Mode 1 Architects and now 2PM London Ltd)
  • Session 2 – Tuesday 27 February 2024 (6.30-8pm): Professionalism demystified (Tai Lau, 2PM London)
  • Session 3 – Tuesday 05 March 2024 (6.30-8pm): Negotiation Skills (Tai Lau, 2PM London)
  • Session 4 – Tuesday 26 March 2024 (6.30-8pm): Exposure and Experience (Tai Lau, 2PM London)
  • Session 5 – Tuesday 02 April 2024 (6.30-8pm): Developing critical thinking and self-awareness (Tai Lau, 2PM London)
  • Session 7 – Tuesday 07 May 2024 (6.30-8pm): Understanding planning, conservation and building control (Edward Ihejirika, DCUK)
  • Session 8 – Tuesday 28 May 2024 (6.30-8pm): Types of building procurement routes explained (Alan Brown, IID Architects)
  • Session 9 – Tuesday 4 June 2024 (6.30-8pm): Your question and answers (Wilfred Achille)

  • The course is led by two of the University of Westminster's RIBA Part 3 team who have extensive experience of guiding students through their practical experience.
  • The course includes a PSA to sign your PEDR’s and give you advice during the year.
  • The course includes face to face sessions.
  • The course is taught at the Marylebone Campus in central London.
  • The course is currently closed for bookings.
  • RIBA student membership is free to all RIBA Part I and Part II students.
