Overview

Course summary

This course provides an understanding of a number of key issues in air transport management, marketing and business planning. We will consider both the airline and airport sectors of the industry. The course complements Introduction to Air Transport Economics and Planning, which covers the economic and regulatory aspects.

Who is this course for?

Although we will cover a considerable amount of material, the course is designed to be accessible to participants without detailed prior knowledge of the aviation business.

It is therefore ideal for new staff working for airlines or airports, for government departments or in aviation consultancy. It is also suitable for employees with some prior background experience who wish to broaden their understanding of the industry and reflect on current developments. This would include staff moving from operational functions into a broader management role.

The course will also be valuable for people working in related fields such as finance, economic development or tourism who deal with airline and airport issues.

Course structure

The course is based around lecture sessions of 60–90 minutes' duration, incorporating time for questions and discussion, on the following topics:

  • understanding air passenger demand
  • airline product planning
  • airport marketing
  • techniques for strategy evaluation
  • emerging airline business models
  • cost analysis of airport operations
  • scheduling: commercial and operational issues
  • crew scheduling
  • human resource management and organisational issues
  • employee relations in the air transport industry
  • characteristics of air cargo
  • managing relations between airlines and airports
