Program Overview
We are in a cultural and historical period in which our society is surrounded and influenced by a wealth of photography like never before. We see it as our task to give students an understanding of the visual and technical skills necessary to understand, critically question, and reflect on different visual languages. Understanding the medium of photography and its conscious use are therefore indispensable not only in art, but also in advertising and editorial work.
The University of Europe for Applied Sciences (UE) has a pioneering study programme in this field. We were among the first German private universities to establish a photography programme. During your studies, you’ll familiarise yourself with and try out various photographic genres, such as portrait, fashion, art, and documentary.
Program Outline
The Bachelor's degree programme Photography & New Media is divided into module groups. In the basics, creative skills such as light, colour design and image composition, as well as the complete analogue and digital workflow, are taught. In parallel, the theoretical subjects provide an overview of historical and contemporary developments in art, photography, design and film.
In the project modules, there is the possibility of specialisation in individual genres of photography. Students can use our professional equipment (photo studios, the darkroom, printing workshop, scan labs, Mac Pools and loan equipment) for their projects.
The range of interdisciplinary courses, workshops and study trips also allows students to acquire knowledge from other design courses. The choice between an internship in Germany or abroad or a guest study programme at one of our partner universities is intended to broaden your personal and professional horizons before the final semester of the bachelor's degree, when the sharpening and definition of your individual photographic profile are imminent.
The programme
-
Our aim is to help students develop an individual photographic attitude and an independent position to give them the courage to experiment, cross borders and become aware of their social and societal responsibility as photographers. During the course of their studies, students can choose from various genres of photography such as documentary, staged, applied or artistic photography. The course of study is open to all students and also offers the option of taking interdisciplinary electives in other programmes. In addition to imparting theoretical and practical knowledge, our support not only for internal university projects but also for external exhibition projects plays an important role.
-
Our university focuses on your development. That's why we teach in small learning groups and in a friendly and personal atmosphere. We’ll oversee your individual development process and help you define your talents and strengths, while helping you develop your own visual signature. You will be taught by renowned photographers.

Career options with a degree in Photography & New Media
Working with photos does not automatically mean you have to be an independent photographer. With a bachelor’s degree in Photography & New Media, a whole world of career options is open to you, including image editor, art buyer, retoucher, or curator.
Of course, you can also work as a photographer within the advertising industry, for publications, corporate communications, and events, or as an artist. In most cases, you will work as a freelancer. Since the technical aspects of photography are becoming more and more accessible, being able to turn your ideas and feelings into visual concepts, to learn soft skills, self-marketing, and organisational talent, is required more today than ever before.
Possible salary in Germany after studying Photography & New Media
The salary after studying photography as an employee can vary depending on the industry, company size and location, but also on other factors. According to mystipendium.de, a gross monthly salary of around 1,600 to 4,000 euros can be expected for an employed photographer, whereby career starters should not expect more than 2,000 euros, according to Career Jump.
As a freelance photographer, the monthly salary is strongly dependent on the current order situation - how high the individual hourly rate turns out depends, among other things, on one's own experience and previous portfolio. As a beginner, an hourly fee of at least 80 euros is realistic, with additional fees for the image usage rights in some circumstances - however, depending on the client and personal brand awareness, this can increase.
