Degree Overview:

The MSc Intellectual Property is designed for those wishing to specialize in intellectual property law, specifically for those wishing to become a patent or trade mark attorney. The program is taught by lecturers from both academia and practice. Students receive a profound education covering the core IP disciplines – patent, trade mark, and design and copyright law – with a focus on UK law but including a strong European and international perspective. The program is accredited by the Intellectual Property Regulation Board.


Outline:

The program is one year long and runs full-time from the beginning of September to late-March (first week of September-late March). The majority of modules on this program are compulsory, including a compulsory research component (study project) which will run in the third semester between May and August. The assessment/examination period for modules will be in the January exam period, the May exam period, and the Summer exam period. The core modules covered are:

  • Intellectual Property Law
  • Trade Marks
  • Patents
  • Designs
  • Copyright
  • Compulsory non-assessed modules include:
  • Legal Research
  • Legal Writing
  • Students are able to choose one optional module from the list below:

Assessment:

You will be assessed by a range of methods which will be fully explained in your student pack available during induction week. For modules taught in semester one, you will be assessed in the January exam period. For modules taught in semester two, you will be assessed in the Summer exam period. During the third semester, you will have the opportunity to finish your study project and you will be assessed on the basis of your study project and oral presentation.


Teaching:

The program is delivered through a mixture of formal lectures and occasional tutorials. The tutorials are designed to generate informed discussions around set topics and may involve student reviewing past exam questions and group exercises. The program benefits from the reputation and expertise of Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute (QMIPRI), which runs regular research discussions, seminars and annual events.


Careers:

There is a very high rate of employment of our students within six months of graduation. We have specialist career advisers who will organize events and assist with finding internship opportunities and jobs for UK and international students.


Other:

  • Students who take and successfully pass the foundational exam papers in Trade Mark Law, Patent Law and Copyright Law, as well as the Foundational Law & Ethics course, will gain exemption from the foundation exams of the IPReg related professional courses, provided they pass the MSc.

  • Students finishing the program and awarded a First or Upper Second are eligible to apply for a one-year paid internship with the OHIM or EPO under the Pan-European Seal Program.
