Program Outline
Degree Overview
This program aims to provide graduate-level students with in-depth knowledge and experience in the Internet of Things (IoT) and Future Networks. It focuses on understanding and addressing emerging challenges surrounding data communication and collection that the ubiquitous distribution of smart objects throughout modern cities, communities, and ecosystems presents. By analyzing how intelligent connected items and smart grids operate and evolve within and across industries, students graduate capable of effectively addressing future design needs across numerous industry applications.
Outline
Semester A:
- ECS714P - Embedded Systems (5 ECTS credits)
- ECS783P - Enabling Communications Technologies for IoT (5 ECTS credits)
- ECS781P - Cloud Computing
- ECS7020P - Principles of Machine Learning
Semester B:
- ECS725P - Mobile Services (5 ECTS credits)
- ECS726P - Security & Authentication (5 ECTS credits)
- ECS7031P - IoT Systems Engineering
- ECS7008P - Modelling & Performance
Semester C:
- ECS750P – Project (60 ECTS credits) - Students collaborate in a group setting under the supervision of experts in the research group. The project’s focus, scope, and subject must be within the bounds of the IoT or other pertinent domains, such as communications, signal processing, etc. All three components must adhere to strict academic ethical standards and be properly acknowledged.
Assessment
Each ECS-module will have the following weighting structure for marking:
- Coursework = 30%
- Exam = 70%
- Project = 100% Specific coursework weighting may be subject to modification. Students are assessed through assignments (individual or group presentations) and regular class tests.
Successful attainment of a pass at all levels of all assessments permits you to proceed as a student through levels 4, 5 and 6 (levels 5 and 6 are represented by Stages 2/3 respectively in your qualification title: MEng / BSc), in accordance with QMUL assessment regulations.
Teaching
The School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science employs a variety of pedagogical methods across diverse course modules to impart knowledge regarding the IoT and connected technology applications to its graduate degree students. These may involve a combination of traditional lectures with guest speakers who are leading figures in relevant industries along with laboratory practical sessions to bolster hands-on experience. Moreover, research group-driven tutorials on relevant subjects may also contribute to your learning.
Careers
Graduate-level degree recipients in the IoT and Future Networks program possess the expertise to succeed in diverse sectors including software applications as developers at technology firms, network security, systems, or infrastructure management in IT positions, research roles in industry or academia, project management on engineering jobs at large or small enterprises, consulting as technology specialists in engineering firms, and as educators.
Other
Students of this program are encouraged to partake in networking events with prospective employers for career development opportunities. Some prominent participating entities have included Microsoft, Nokia, Intel, Samsung, Ericsson, Telefonica, and Vodafone. Other initiatives of note consist of alumni mentorship in collaborative professional partnerships and internship options. It should be noted that details, policies, and program structure in its entirety for any given academic term are those as specified in QMUL program documents from that same time period.
