The Critical Care Online PGCert
is a part-time, 4-month program designed for clinicians and senior nurses working in Intensive Care Medicine. The course requires 15 credits and can be completed entirely online, making it a flexible option for busy professionals.
Objectives:
- Advance theoretical and practical skills in critical care related to the management of critically ill or injured patients.
- Develop leadership skills and abilities necessary to lead the provision of the highest standards of critical care.
- Demonstrate achievement of learning outcomes through assessments and clinical practice.
- Develop related skills such as critical appraisal of research, scientific literature review, writing, presenting, and data analysis using statistical methods and databases.
The program aims to:
- Provide advanced knowledge in critical care for the management of patients with complex and potentially life-threatening conditions.
- Develop critical thinking and decision-making abilities under pressure.
- Prepare participants to lead and advocate for high-quality critical care in their respective settings.
- Enhance research skills and promote evidence-based practice in critical care.
Outline:
The curriculum is divided into four modules:
Semester 1
- Module 1: Pathophysiological Basis of Critical Illness (5 credits): This module covers normal cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, liver, haematological, and immune physiology and function. It also explores the pathophysiological changes that occur in these systems in critical illness and examines the impact of critical illness on the body. Topics covered include fluid resuscitation, inotropes and vasopressors, mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal therapies, and acute kidney injury management.
Semester 2
- Module 3: Care of the Unconscious Patient: (5 credits) This module focuses on the care and management of patients with altered consciousness. Topics include the management of the unconscious state, airway and respiratory care, pain management, and neurological assessment and monitoring.
- Module 4: Neurocritical Care and Trauma Management (5 credits): This module covers the management and care of patients with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, as well as other neurological conditions such as stroke and subarachnoid haemorrhage.
Assessment:
- Continuous assessment: Throughout the modules, participants will complete a variety of assessments, including:
- Completion of written work
- Participation in examinations
- Presentation of assignments
- Each module will be assessed on the basis of written work and examinations.
Teaching:
- The program is delivered through a combination of online learning resources and interactive sessions.
- Participants will have access to a dedicated online platform where they can access course materials, interact with peers and faculty, participate in discussions, and complete assessments.
- Interactive sessions are conducted by experienced faculty who are experts in critical care medicine.

- The course fee for home students is £4,250 and £13,450 for overseas students. EU/EEA and Swiss students are subject to the Home fee.
- Participants who successfully complete this PGCert may be eligible to continue their studies in the online Critical Care MSc program.
