Program Overview


This MSc program in Computing and Information Systems Development provides students with practical skills in software engineering, computer systems, and applications. Students can choose between a Software Systems stream or a Business Systems stream, and the program features a combination of coursework and written examinations. Degree Overview:

This program aims to provide students with theoretical and practical skills in computing and information systems development. The program has strong practical elements, concentrating on software engineering, computer systems and applications.


Outline:

The program will cover six compulsory modules:

  • ECS7009P - Introduction to Software Engineering
  • ECS7005P - Risk and Decision-Making for Data Science and AI
  • ECS7010P - Computer Architecture and Networks
  • ECS726P - Security and Authentication
  • ECS740P - Database Systems
  • ECS780P - Computer Programming
  • Students will also choose a set of elective modules, organised into two streams:
  • Software Systems stream (default)
  • ECS733P - Interactive System Design
  • ECS784P - Data Analytics
  • Business Systems stream
  • ECS725P - Mobile Services
  • ECS745P - Business Information Systems
  • Students choosing the Software Systems stream will follow a software engineering curriculum, while students selecting the Business Systems stream will focus on information systems for business applications. The full-time option takes one year, with part-time options available for two years, starting in either September or March.

Assessment:

Assessment is through a combination of coursework and written examinations. There are typically two coursework assignments per module, with one end-of-semester exam.


Teaching

Queen Mary boasts excellent research facilities and resources available to MSc students. The program instructors are distinguished faculty members, drawn from the Game AI and Cognitive Science research groups, as well as the Centre for Intelligent Sensing (CIS). Notably, Dr Tony Stockman is a renowned researcher in human-computer interaction, auditory displays, and data sonification. Students have access to various labs and equipment for practical work.


Careers

Graduates of this program are well-prepared for IT consultancy, specialist engineer, web developer, systems analyst, technology strategist, or software designer roles. They may also pursue PhDs in related fields. Queen Mary alumni have secured employment with organizations such as Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, Nokia, Barclays Capital, Logica, Credit Suisse, KPMG, Transport for London, Sky, and Selex ES.

  • The course fee for the full-time option is £12,650.
  • The part-time option costs £6,350 per annum.
  • EU/EEA/Swiss students qualify for the same fees.
  • The applicant should have a 2:1 or above at undergraduate level in computer science or related subject.
  • Applicants with lower grades may be considered for the Graduate Diploma in Finance and Economics or the Graduate Diploma in Humanities and Social Sciences.

  • A 2:1 or above at undergraduate level in a degree not related to Computer Science or a degree with less than 50% of the modules in Computer Science subjects.
  • Other routes: Candidates that do not meet the entry requirements may also have the option to study the Graduate Diploma in Finance and Economics or the Graduate Diploma in Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Meeting the required grades on completion of this programme provides a pathway to study MSc Computing and Information Systems.
  • International: You will also need to demonstrate your level of English proficiency by achieving one of the following scores:
