Program Overview
This Postgraduate Certificate in Trade Mark Law and Practice is designed for trainee Trade Mark attorneys and provides a comprehensive overview of Trade Mark Law, including its definition, nature, registerability, and infringement. It also covers advanced issues such as Trade Marks and the Internet, Geographical Indications, and International Trade Mark Disputes. The program is taught by distinguished lecturers and practitioners in the field of intellectual property and provides the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to excel in this field.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
This program is designed exclusively for trainee Trade Mark attorneys. It has been designed to meet the requirements of the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (CITMA) and the Intellectual Property Regulation Board (IPReg) for those wishing to pursue a career as a Trade Mark Attorney. It is also valuable if you want to understand national, European and international Trade Mark Law at an advanced level as well as become acquainted with the policies affecting these laws under the guidance of leading scholars and practitioners in the field. The program consists of four compulsory modules – three are taught in Semester 1 and one in Semester 2. Teaching starts on the 9th of September 2024 with a one-week intensive course covering the Fundamentals of English law and Professional Ethics. This is taught Monday-Thursday usually with two classes per day. Weekly lectures commence the week after. The total fee for the Certificate will be reduced should the exemption be granted.

Module 1: Fundamentals of Law and Professional Ethics (IPLC134)

Module 3: Trade Mark Law and Practice II (IPLM191)
(Compulsory) This module will analyze advanced issues in Trade Mark Law, including:

- International Trade Mark Disputes
- Trade Mark Licensing and Franchising
- Current Developments in Trade Mark Law
- Copyright and Moral Rights
- Ownership and Exploitation of Copyright

- Design Rights
Assessment:
You will be assessed by a range of methods which will be fully explained in your student pack available during the induction activities starting on the 4th of September 2024. For modules taught in Semester 1 you will be assessed in the January exam period. For modules taught in Semester 2 you will be assessed in the summer exam period. This will also be explained in detail in the induction activities.
Teaching:
The module teaching will be at one of the Queen Mary central campus locations: Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Charterhouse Square or West Smithfield. You will be taught by distinguished lecturers and practitioners within the field of intellectual property. Working with these experienced professionals will enhance both your skills and your professional network.

This program will give you the opportunity to apply your learning to your own practice. This PGCert will bolster your current career and your employability. More activities in relation to that will be organised during the induction activities week.
Other:
This program can be completed on a part-time basis. Students are expected to commit approximately 8 hours per week to studying. The program provides the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to excel in the field of Trade Mark Law. You will have the opportunity to network with your peers and lecturers during a week-long induction event at the beginning of the program.
