The Gastroenterology PGDip is a nine-month, full-time program designed for practicing clinicians seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills in gastrointestinal medicine. Gastroenterology PGDip

This intensive program is designed for practising clinicians who want to learn more about the science underpinning clinical diseases and their management. It touches on a number of core topics, from paediatric and adolescent gastrointestinal (GI) through to adult GI diseases. The program is ideal for those who want to keep their clinical skills up-to-date and increase their knowledge of different areas of GI medicine. It can also be a good stepping stone for those who want to go on to complete an MSc in Gastroenterology.

The Gastroenterology PGDip is a nine-month, full-time program delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and case presentations. The program covers a wide range of topics, including:

  • Adult Gastro-Intestinal Diseases: Luminal Diseases

Program Structure:

The program is delivered over a nine-month period, with each module lasting four weeks. The program is divided into six modules, each consisting of a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and case presentations. In addition, students will complete a research project.

  • Immunology and inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract
  • Pharmacology of gastrointestinal drugs

Module 2: Liver and Pancreatic Disease

This module covers the diagnosis and management of liver and pancreatic diseases. Topics covered include:

  • Acute and chronic liver disease
  • Viral hepatitis
  • Alcoholic liver disease
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Cirrhosis and its complications
  • Pancreatitis

  • Anorectal disorders

Module 5: Paediatric and Adolescent Gastro-Intestinal and Liver Diseases, Gastro-Intestinal Infections

This module covers the diagnosis and management of paediatric and adolescent gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Topics covered include:

  • Congenital gastrointestinal malformations
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease in children
  • Inflammatory bowel disease in children
  • Coeliac disease in children
  • Functional gastrointestinal disorders in children

  • Indications for endoscopy
  • Techniques of endoscopy
  • Complications of endoscopy
  • Other gastrointestinal investigations, such as imaging and biopsy

Assessment:

Assessment is based on a combination of coursework and a written exam. Coursework includes:

  • The written exam is a three-hour exam that covers the entire syllabus.
