About Program

Program Overview

This 1-year MRes program in Cardiac and Vascular Medicine trains researchers in advanced molecular and cellular pharmacological techniques, focusing on deeper phenotyping in cardiac and vascular inflammation research. Students conduct a research project under the guidance of an experienced academic supervisor, developing practical and analytical skills in a state-of-the-art facility. Graduates are qualified for research-focused positions or further study, including PhD programs with potential funding opportunities.

Program Outline

Cardiac and Vascular Medicine MRes

Degree Overview:

This 1-year full-time MRes program aims to:

  • Train researchers in advanced molecular and cellular pharmacological techniques.
  • Provide researchers with skills for successful careers in UK Life Sciences, focusing on deeper phenotyping in cardiac and vascular inflammation research (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, pulmonary hypertension, hypertension, arrhythmia, nephrology or cancer).
  • The program focuses on three research areas:
  • Cardiac Inflammation and Cardiovascular Risk
  • Microvascular inflammation and vascular permeability
  • Microenvironment in Cardiovascular Inflammation

Outline:

Taught modules:

  • Inflammation: Cellular and Vascular Aspects (3-month intensive course of lectures, tutorials, workshops, and practicals)
  • Research Project (conducted under the guidance of an experienced academic supervisor)

Research Project:

Students will:

  • Design and execute a research project under the guidance of an experienced academic supervisor.
  • Develop their practical and analytical skills in a state-of-the-art facility.
  • Contribute to the research culture and knowledge base in healthcare.
  • Present their research findings through written reports and oral presentations.

Assessment:

Assessment methods include:

  • Teaching
  • In the first semester, students will follow an initial three-month course of lectures, tutorials, workshops, and practicals.
  • You will also acquire skills in writing, presentation, statistics, laboratory safety, critical analysis and more specialised research techniques.
  • In the following two semesters, you will apply what you have learned to a substantive research project.

Teaching:

The program offers:

  • State-of-the-art practical training in modern molecular and cellular pharmacological techniques.
  • Hands-on experience using renowned research techniques applicable to both further study and industry environments.
  • Access to world-leading Charterhouse Square site, specialized in cardiovascular, inflammation and endocrine research themes.
  • An opportunity to build confidence through academic studies, reinforced by using renowned research techniques.

Careers:

Graduates from this course are qualified to:

  • Apply their knowledge directly to the field and work in research-focused positions or further study.
  • Pursue PhD studies in this field of research with potential funding opportunities available through the British Heart Foundation.

Other:

  • The program is open to students with a 2:1 or above at undergraduate level in Biomedical Science or a related discipline.
  • There are a limited number of places available on the program.
  • Applications are encouraged to be submitted as soon as possible and no later than November 17th of the academic year in which you wish to start your studies.
