Degree Overview:
• Interdisciplinary Approach: Drawing upon expertise within the School's Art, Music, Arts, and Film Production programs, with a specific focus on debates surrounding the creative economy in conjunction with Asian, African, and regional studies.

Outline:
First Year:
Students partake in research training, dedicated breakout sessions based on chosen pathways, participate in postgraduate courses such as Theory and method in Ethnomusicology or Theory and method for art history, attending departmental seminars and creating an annual training.
Second Year (MPhil) and beyond (PhD):
Focus on thesis development with additional potential requirements including submitting a Research Proposal/ Upgrade Paper, attending the annual training plan, passing an oral examination.
Assessment:
MPhil
Students will submit a 12,000-word paper for a final examination.
PhD
Research Proposal/Upgraded Paper:
A thorough paper of around 80,000 words. Resources:
In addition to a program advisor, Mphil/phD students are assigned a panel of two academics to aid their progress, the panel includes
- 1 lead supervisor, located within the Arts school
- Second or third advisor
Library:
The program provides access to one of London's most prominent academic library systems and research facilities in African Asian and Middle Eastern studies. The library offers over 1.2 Million volumes, archival libraries, special collections, and burgeoning digital sources.

Language Proficiency Requirements:
English Language Proficiency:
All applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English. The minimum requirements are:
- IELTS: 7.0 overall, with a minimum of 6.5 in each component
- TOEFL iBT: 100 overall, with a minimum of 24 in each section
- PTE Academic: 70 overall, with a minimum of 65 in each component
- Cambridge English Advanced: 180 overall, with a minimum of 176 in each skill
Exemptions:
- Applicants who have completed a degree program taught and assessed in English at a recognized university may be exempt from the English language requirement.
- Applicants who are native speakers of English may also be exempt from the requirement.
