Modules:
- Social and Cultural Themes of Sport: Examines the development of sport and physical culture in Britain and continental Europe from the 1850s, including the emergence of amateurism, its tensions with commercialization, and the modernization and globalization of sporting practices.
- Sport, Politics and Policy: Explores the relationship between sport and international politics, the impact of government policies on sport, identity politics in sport, the history of mega-events like the Olympics, global sporting institutions like the IOC and FIFA, and sport during the Cold War.
- Investigating Sports History: Research Methods: Equips students with the necessary skills for undertaking their dissertation, focusing on project planning, research methodologies (archival research, oral history, and using various forms of media), and effective writing techniques.
- Football: Past and Present: Explores the history of football from its origins to its modern development, covering the professionalization and commercialization of the game, the emergence of international football, the influence of media, the role of football managers and fans, and the game's modernization and global actors like FIFA.
Assessment:
- Critical Analysis Assignments: Two assignments per module, each 2,000 words.
- Essays: One essay per module, 5,000 words.
- Investigating Sports History: Research Methods: Primary source analysis (3,000 words) and dissertation plan (3,000 words).
