Degree Overview

This postgraduate program aims to refine your filmmaking skills, encompassing storytelling, lighting, production design, and directing while equipping you with essential skills in business and production management, such as post-production, pitching, budgeting, and project management. This includes dedicated sessions focusing on international film movements outside the Western world, encouraging you to draw upon your personal experiences and knowledge of your home countries’ cinema to enrich your filmmaking practice. As you progress, you will engage in hands-on modules in pre-production and production, collaborating with your peers on short and large film projects, building a strong portfolio of content. These experiences culminate in your final semester where you can choose between completing a dissertation or an individual film project. Graduating from this program equips you with the skills to pursue a career in film, television, or media. Previous graduates have secured roles as Art Directors, Camera Operators, Editorial & Clearance Coordinators, Directors and Producers on short and feature films for various companies such as Sky, BBC, Channel 4, and Channel 5.

Teaching

You can expect to attend around 10-15 hours of timetabled taught sessions per week during term time, with an additional 20 hours dedicated to independent study and assignments. The program benefits from the expertise of experienced industry professionals and academics, including:

  • Rhys Davies: A filmmaker with over 15 years of experience, including theatrical film releases and worldwide distribution.
  • Rhys has served as Assistant Director on Oscar-nominated short films and as a writer for BAFTA-winning production company Sleepydog Productions. His current research focuses on borderless filmmaking, exploring oral histories, documentaries' role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, and adapting folk tales into indigenous horror films.
  • Dr. James Russell: Deputy Dean for Computing, Engineering, and Media.
  • Dr. Russell specializes in the economics and history of the film and media industries. His most recent book is "Hollywood and the Baby Boom: A Social History." His teaching focuses on the financial aspects of movies, TV shows, and streaming content.
  • Sam Wheatley: An editor and assistant editor with extensive experience in the film industry since 2009.
  • Sam has also worked as a camera assistant and operator. He has expertise in various camera formats and editing software.
