Program Overview
The Fashion and Textiles MA program at DMU is a research-inspired, practice-based, and design-led program that aims to challenge graduates to explore their chosen specialism and take their development to the next level of creative innovation. The program offers three specialization tracks: Fashion Design, Footwear Design and Accessories, and Textile Design. Students will develop creative, technical, and academic knowledge, as well as a critical and contextual understanding of wider issues facing the global fashion industry. The Fashion and Textiles MA program aims to challenge motivated graduates from fashion and textiles disciplines to explore their chosen specialism and take their development to the next level of creative innovation.
Description:
This research-inspired, practice-based, and design-led program focuses on:
- Building creative, technical, and academic knowledge.
- Developing a critical and contextual understanding of wider issues facing the global fashion industry.
- Tailoring skills to career aspirations through optional modules.
- Completing a live external client project (optional).
- Learning independently and directing studies with encouragement and support from specialist teachers.
- Utilizing outstanding facilities to push creative boundaries and advance technical skills.
Specialization Tracks:
- Fashion Design: Focuses on womenswear, menswear, and fashion knitwear.
- Footwear Design and Accessories: Covers women’s, men’s, and children’s footwear and accessories for sport, leisure, or fashion.
- Textile Design: Examines printed, constructed, and mixed media in relation to fashion, interiors, and lifestyle.

Course Structure:
- One year full-time or two years part-time.
- Starts in September 2024.
Modules:
- Block 1: Design Innovation: Develops conceptual thinking, creative approaches to design, and technical aspects of product realization.
- Block 2: Research and Design Communication: Enhances creative and technical skills to effectively communicate design concepts.
- Digital Development: Utilize technology for creative product development and communication.
- Block 4: PRE-Collection: Strengthen 2D design to 3D resolution skills.
- Blocks 5 and 6: Major Project: Complete a major project with a focus on either design practice or critical evaluation.
Schedule:
- 8-10 hours of timetabled sessions per week in the first two terms.
- 25 hours of independent study per week in the first two terms.
- Predominantly self-directed study in the third term with 35 hours of independent study per week.
Assessment:
- Continuous assessment through methods such as 2D/3D design projects, portfolios, reports/essays, blogs, poster presentations, and oral presentations.
Teaching:
- Promotes independent learning.
- Supported by specialist staff.
- Encourages students to negotiate and direct their own learning.
- Tuition mainly takes the form of skills development workshops and design tutorials with additional lectures and seminars.
- Aims to build on individual skills and knowledge.
- Staff team consists of designers, researchers, and/or senior academics with a strong design and technical focus.
- Course teaching is complemented by visiting lecturers and guest speakers who are leading industry practitioners.
