Program Overview
De Montfort University's Social Work BA (Hons) program prepares students to become effective and compassionate social work practitioners. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge, practical placements, and interprofessional learning, graduates gain the skills and experience to support vulnerable individuals and communities in various settings.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
This program trains students to become confident, effective, resilient, and safe social work practitioners. It covers all aspects of social work, including theories and methods, legislation, skills for practice, and developing professional competency. It aims to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills to support and help vulnerable people and communities.
Key features:
- Taught by experienced staff with extensive practical, teaching, and research experience.
- High involvement of people with lived experience across the program, including co-taught lectures and assessments.
- Students learn to work with both adults and children and are eligible to enter any area of practice upon graduating.
- Two assessed practical social work placements from a wide range of settings that enhance student learning, experience, and employability.
- Interprofessional learning opportunities alongside students and practitioners from various fields.

Year 1:
- Preparation for Social Work Practice
- Introduction to Law, Policy and Procedure
- Understanding the Life Span (Human growth and development)
- Introduction to Social Work Theories and Skills in practice
Year 2:
- Practice Placement (70 days)
- Law for Social Work Practice
- Research informed practice
- Social Work Theories, Processes and Skills in Practice
- Inter-Professional Education (IPE)
Year 3:
- Research Project
- The Developing Professional Practitioner
- Professional Judgement and Decision Making
- Final Practice Placement (100 days)
Teaching and Learning Approaches:
- Individual and group work
- Shadowing
- Problem-based learning

- Placements (normal working hours)
Assessment:
- Communication exercise with a service user or carer and a shadowing exercise with a social worker in Year 1.
- Passing both the second and third year placements.
- Other assessments as specified in individual modules.
Teaching:
- Experienced staff with extensive practical, teaching, and research experience.
- High involvement of people with lived experience across the program.
- UDL approach offering a wide range of support, facilities, and technology for all students.
- Access to DMU Replay for anytime access to audio and/or visual material of lectures.

Graduate Careers:
- Statutory and voluntary agencies with service user groups such as children, young people, adults with mental health needs, older people, and people with physical and learning disabilities.
- Social work with children and families, child protection, older people, people with learning disabilities, people who misuse substances and alcohol, people with mental health needs.
Postgraduate Opportunities:
- Masters in Research (Social Work) MRes
- Health/Youth and Community Development (with or without Professional Qualification) MA

- Approved by Social Work England.
- Students may be eligible for a non-repayable bursary.
- Work experience in social care is desirable.
- Suitability Declaration and DBS check required.
- Placements usually based in Leicestershire or Leicester City.
