Overview:

This program aims to equip registered nurses who have not worked in general practice with the fundamental skills needed for the General Practice Nurse (GPN) role.

  • Teaching by experienced practitioners who are specialists in practice and community nursing.
  • Input from visiting lecturers who are experienced practitioners in the field.
  • Inter-professional learning that develops teamwork skills.
  • Module content aligned to the Royal College of General Practitioners' (RCGP) competencies.

Objectives:

  • To prepare students with the necessary knowledge and skills for the GPN role.
  • To develop both clinical and academic skills for a career in General Practice Nursing.

Target Audience:

  • Registered nurses with no prior experience in general practice.

Note:

This program is currently supported by the Local Education Training Board and Health Education East Midland.

Course Content:

The program focuses on developing the key clinical skills required for the GPN role, including venepuncture, ear care, wound management, cervical cytology, immunization and vaccination, and chronic condition management.


Structure:

  • Block teaching: Students study one module at a time to promote deeper learning.
  • Regular assessments: Assessments are spread throughout the year instead of concentrated exams at the end.
  • Simple timetable: This allows for participation in sports, societies, and other extracurricular activities.
  • Supervised work-based learning: Students will have a GPN mentor who provides support and guidance in the workplace.

  • BSc General Practice Nursing: Introduction to Practice Nursing (60 credits, level six)
