Program Overview


The MSc Management (Global Supply Chain Management) award is focused on specialization in management of strategic operations and supply chain management globally. The program allows you to choose an experiential project in your third semester, with options including a consultancy experience project, an in-company experience project, or a business research project. This course has been awarded Dual Award status with the Chartered Management Institute and upon graduation, you can have a Masters degree and a CMI Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership.

What you’ll study

At NBS you can create a personalised learning experience, giving you a unique Masters degree that equips you with the skills you'll need, for the career you want. Each of the modules will be delivered over a four week period, with teaching delivered in three weeks and the fourth week left clear for assessment work. This enables you to focus on one subject at a time, whilst allowing time for preparation and assessment work.

  • Semester One

    Principles of Management (20 credits)

    This module will help you understand contemporary issues, theories and conceptual frameworks used to explain and guide conventional management activities within organisations. More specifically, you will be able to demonstrate an understanding of a range of strategic management concepts that can be utilised to explore and guide effective action in dynamic organisational environments.

    Managing in Organisations (20 credits)

    This module helps you to develop a broad knowledge of the principles and concepts underlying delivering value integrating operations, people and financial management. You will be able to develop an understanding of how a range of financial and operations management tools and approaches can be practically applied in support of an organisation’s business strategy. Finally, you will be able to develop the capability to strategically focus the management planning, control and improvement processes in a range of business environments.

    Contexts of Management (20 credits)

    This module explores how the external environment influences management decision making within organisations, specifically in relation to strategy development.  The module’s aims to develop your understanding of how organisations create strategies to increase competitiveness in a rapidly changing environment. You will develop your analytical abilities and decision making capability needed as future managers and leaders operating in an international environment. On completion of this module you will have a better understanding of the various schools of thought in strategy development and the role of strategic discourse in this process.


    Semester Two

    Data Analysis for Managerial Decision Making (20 credits)

    This module will develop your understanding of the data that is used for decision-making within Operations and Supply Chain Management (SCM) and the skills required to analyse this data. It will have a practical focus using ‘real’ data from case studies in order to solve realistic Operations and Supply Chain problems.

    Strategic Operations (20 credits)

    This module will extend your understanding of operations management both practically and strategically. This will extend the scope of the operations spectrum already covered and integrate wider business functions. You will be able to evaluate the strategic implications of variation and uncertainty on the supply chain performance.

    Global Supply Chain Management  (20 credits)

    This module is firmly rooted in understanding the global supply chain and provides a broad knowledge of the principles and concepts underlying the strategic and operational performance of organisations in relation to one another within the international supply chain. You will develop a broad knowledge on operations and marketing to understand Supply Chain structure, alignment to needs of the market, and potential for conflict.


    Semester Three

    In your final semester you will take on a experiential project, giving you a fantastic opportunity to use the theories and knowledge you've gained to produce a challenging, meaningful piece of work. Projects include:

    Consultancy Experience Project (40 credits)

    Working as part of a team, you will undertake focused research, developing your professional skills, managing a complex project and delivering results in a real business situation.  You will present your findings to the client and learn valuable project management tools and concepts.

    In-Company Experience Project (40 credits)

    On an in-company experience project of seven weeks or more, you'll apply the theories you've learnt to a substantial, live project. This will involve focused research, developing skills, managing a complex project and delivering results in a real business situation. You'll also learn project management tools and concepts.

    Business Research Project (40 credits)

    This project is a more traditional piece of independent research, creating an academic research paper, presentation and methodological reflection. Because we believe experiential learning is so important, this project is only available to students with significant prior work experience or a desire to progress to a PhD.

    Ongoing Learning

    Throughout the year you will also study the following modules which will help you understand how to manage your own continuous personal and professional development (PPD).

    Professional Practice (10 credits)

    The purpose of the module is to increase your understanding of your own personal and professional development needs to enhance your business acumen and improve your employability. The module utilises a series of taught sessions to help you explore the human side of enterprise and deploys a series of diagnostics tests to help you evaluate yourself and develop an individual action plan. It will combine teaching with individual and group mentoring to help you execute your plan. The module also promotes engagement with internal and external workshops, lectures, experiential learning opportunities and extra-curricular events to help you expand your knowledge and skills, whilst challenging your attitudes and behaviours. You will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of continuous professional development from the perspective of professional bodies, such as the CMI, CIM, APM and SPE.

    Research Methods for Managers (10 credits)

    The purpose of the module is for you to acquire the knowledge and skills to be able to formulate, plan and conduct effective research to inform management decisions, through conducting a small-scale research project.

    Placement Diploma in Industrial Experience (2 year course only)

    This module aims to develop your understanding of the business and commercial environment. You will apply relevant prior knowledge and skills in the business environment increasing your commercial awareness. On completion of the module, you will have developed a range of skills and have a practical insight into the world of work and possible career opportunities.

    If you start your Masters in September you can apply for the two-year option where you can add a year’s work placement onto your course. It’s a great way to put your learning into practice and gain valuable real-world experience to help boost your career prospects once graduating.

    Your placement year will last up to 48 weeks (minimum 36 weeks). If you are unable to take a full year's placement, but have completed the minimum 36 weeks you can qualify for a Placement Diploma in Industrial Experience. If you undertake a placement, you must take up the Business Research Project in Semester Three.

    This course has been awarded Dual Award status with the Chartered Management Institute, which means you can graduate with a Masters degree and a CMI Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership.

    In addition to the qualification and included with Dual Accreditation is student membership with CMI for the duration of the course. Membership whilst you are on the course is included in the course fee. The CMI’s online resource portal, ManagementDirect, offers digital resources, networking, mentoring and support.

    You will gain the CMI qualification upon graduation and you are then eligible to become a full member of the CMI and have the opportunity to work towards Chartered Manager status should you wish.
