Program Overview
What is Interior Architecture and Design BA (Hons)?
Are you inspired by design and fascinated by interior spaces, architecture and how spaces can elevate our experience of places?
Interior Architecture & Design is a distinct course with a specific focus on creating and carving exciting spaces for both new and existing buildings. The course spans between larger scale architecture and smaller scale interior design elements. You will develop and design projects with a focus on the themes of events, activities and user-experience – taking inspiration from Cheltenham’s renowned reputation for festivals.
Sustainability is inherently embedded within the course, not only through the notion of reuse and refurbishment, but also from a wider environmental, social and community perspective.
You will work in local, national and international environments and at varying scales – ranging from a wide urban scale, down to the nuts-and-bolts of how architectural elements are assembled. You will be experimenting with and learning a variety of tools to design with – from drawing to model making, and from manual to digital techniques. You will become pioneers at the forefront of interior architecture, adopting emerging technologies and approaches to designing – such as 3D printing, virtual reality (VR) and practice led conventions.
The Interior Architecture & Design course is designed to equip you with both the practical skills and professional knowledge required to pursue a career in interior architecture and a wide range of other design-related disciplines.
Study style
Your learning will take place in a studio-based environment, through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops, field trips and seminars. You will study in a vibrant and collaborative studio culture, sharing ideas and developing designs both individually and collectively. In some cases, you will work alongside other industry related courses such as Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture – imitating the multidisciplinary nature of professional design practice.
As an outward facing course, you will be engaging with sites and users outside of the university campus, tackling real issues and sites for the benefit of communities and society. You will be encouraged to experiment, challenge norms and develop your own approach towards interior architecture.
You’ll benefit from the expertise of practicing professionals and experienced lecturers, who will provide a rich and stimulating environment in which to study Interior Architecture & Design.
