Program Overview

Join two of the team from Aberdeen Ceramics Studio for this one-day workshop where you are invited to learn how to hand build clay sculptures with ceramicists AJ Simpson and Celda Tyndall.

Program Outline

This workshop invites beginners to learn how to build with clay as a material and encourages experimentation with shape and form.

Demonstrations will communicate how to create basic forms with clay and will also show how pieces of clay can be connected.

Over the course of the day, you will learn a variety of basic hand building techniques these involve coiling, slab building and pinch potting.

Using such techniques, participants are encouraged to build their own sculptures by hand, creating organic forms or more structured creations.

Additionally, participants will also learn how to prepare their work, ready for bisque firing using the kiln provided.

Maker’s pots can be collected at a later date.

It’s hoped that more clay creatures will emerge from our ceramic’s studio.

    Staff Delivering on this Course

    AJ Simpson and Celda Tyndall

Delivering this workshop are two of the team from Aberdeen Ceramics Studio, both are recent alumni of Gray’s School of Art.

AJ Simpson won ‘The BBC’s Great Pottery Throwdown’ in 2022. Explored in their practice is the novel side of ceramics. This is demonstrated by their fun ‘blob’ series of decorative one-off characters. Additionally, the ceramicist combines their fun with function and as a result has created a series of blob crockery including blob mugs, bowls, plant pots and more. Recently exploring larger forms, Simpson has introduced a series of dinosaur blobs which showcase bright colours and goofy expressions.

Celda Mae Tyndall has a love for narrative design and femininity, both of which are shown through Tyndall’s jewellery and ceramic designs. Storytelling is at the heart of her practice and this is communicated through objects with messages expressed through kitsch aesthetic.

Within her ceramic work Tyndall has been creating cute and kitsch animal ornaments, incorporated are hand-built flower crowns finished with gold lustre.
